What is Rajju Porutham?
"Rajju" (ரஜ்ஜு) means a cord or rope. In marriage matching it stands for the bond that ties husband and wife together, and Rajju Porutham (ரஜ்ஜு பொருத்தம்) is traditionally linked to the strength and long life of that bond. On Manavizha it appears as "Rajju Porutham (Marital Bond & Longevity)".
Of all ten poruthams, Rajju is the one Tamil families most often treat as essential. Many astrologers will not recommend a match with Rajju mismatch even when the total score is high, which is why it deserves a careful explanation.
The five rajjus
The 27 stars are divided into five rajju groups, named after parts of the body. Each is traditionally associated with an area of family life:
- Siro rajju (சிரசு ரஜ்ஜு, head) — associated with the husband's wellbeing.
- Kanta rajju (கண்ட ரஜ்ஜு, neck) — associated with the wife's wellbeing.
- Nabhi rajju (நாபி ரஜ்ஜு, navel; also called Udara) — associated with children.
- Kati rajju (கடி ரஜ்ஜு, waist; also called Ooru) — associated with the family's finances.
- Pada rajju (பாத ரஜ்ஜு, feet) — associated with travel and settling down together.
Which stars belong to each rajju
- Siro: Mirugasiridam (Mrigashira), Chithirai (Chitra), Avittam (Dhanishta).
- Kanta: Rohini, Thiruvadhirai (Ardra), Hastham (Hasta), Swathi, Thiruvonam (Shravana), Sadhayam (Shatabhisha).
- Nabhi: Karthigai (Krithika), Punarpoosam (Punarvasu), Uthiram (Uttara Phalguni), Visagam (Vishakha), Uthiradam (Uttara Ashadha), Purattadhi (Purva Bhadrapada).
- Kati: Bharani, Pusam (Pushya), Puram (Purva Phalguni), Anusham (Anuradha), Puradam (Purva Ashadha), Uthirattadhi (Uttara Bhadrapada).
- Pada: Ashwini, Ayilyam (Ashlesha), Magam (Magha), Kettai (Jyeshtha), Moolam (Mula), Revathi.
How Rajju Porutham is calculated
Find the rajju of the bride's star and the rajju of the groom's star. If they are in different rajjus, Rajju Porutham matches. If both stars fall in the same rajju, it does not.
That is the rule Manavizha applies. It does not depend on whose star is counted first, so the result is the same in either direction.
One point that surprises many families: when the bride and groom have the same birth star, they are always in the same rajju, so Rajju Porutham does not match.
Worked examples
Example 1: The bride is Ashwini and the groom is Magam. Both are Pada rajju, so Rajju Porutham does not match.
Example 2: The bride is Rohini (Kanta) and the groom is Bharani (Kati). Different rajjus — a match.
Example 3: The bride is Mirugasiridam and the groom is Avittam. Both are Siro rajju, so it does not match. These two stars are also a Vedha pair, which is covered in our Vedha Porutham article.
Example 4: The bride is Uthiram (Nabhi) and the groom is Thiruvonam (Kanta). Different rajjus — a match.
Commonly cited exceptions and variations
Astrologers differ on whether Rajju has any exceptions, so it helps to know the main views:
- Many astrologers hold that a same-rajju match should be avoided without exception.
- Some divide each rajju into ascending (ஆரோகணம்) and descending (அவரோகணம்) stars and consider the concern smaller when one partner's star is ascending and the other's descending.
- Some consider the concern reduced when other strong factors are present — for example when the rasi lords are the same or friendly, or when the overall horoscopes are well balanced.
- Some regional traditions give the different rajjus different levels of importance.
A calm way to read a Rajju result
The areas of life traditionally linked to each rajju can sound worrying when read on their own. It is worth remembering that Rajju Porutham is a traditional guideline built around one simple comparison — two birth stars — and it cannot foresee anyone's health or future.
If Rajju does not match for a proposal your family otherwise likes, the usual step is to ask a trusted astrologer to look at both full horoscopes. Families make the final decision together, considering the person, their values and the relationship between the two families. Manavizha shows Rajju as guidance, alongside the other nine poruthams.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Rajju the most important porutham?
- It is widely regarded as the most important by Tamil astrologers, and Vedha is often named alongside it.
- Can a couple with the same star have Rajju Porutham?
- No. The same star is always in the same rajju, so Rajju Porutham does not match.
- Is there a pariharam for Rajju mismatch?
- Practices differ, and many astrologers prefer not to proceed rather than recommend a remedy. Please discuss your situation with a trusted astrologer or priest.
- Does Rajju exist in North Indian matching?
- Rajju is mainly a South Indian check. North Indian Ashtakoota matching uses a different set of factors, such as Nadi.
