What is Vedha Porutham?

"Vedhai" (வேதை) means affliction or obstruction. Vedha Porutham (வேதைப் பொருத்தம்) checks that the bride's and groom's birth stars are not one of the traditional pairs that are believed to obstruct or trouble each other.

Unlike most poruthams, Vedha is about the absence of a problem. That is why Manavizha labels it "Vedha Porutham (Absence of Affliction)": a match means the two stars are not a Vedha pair.

Along with Rajju, Vedha is one of the poruthams Tamil astrologers most often treat as essential.

The Vedha pairs

Twelve pairs of stars, plus one group of three, are considered to be in Vedha with each other. Tamil names are given first, with the Sanskrit name in brackets.

  • Ashwini and Kettai (Jyeshtha)
  • Bharani and Anusham (Anuradha)
  • Karthigai (Krithika) and Visagam (Vishakha)
  • Rohini and Swathi
  • Thiruvadhirai (Ardra) and Thiruvonam (Shravana)
  • Punarpoosam (Punarvasu) and Uthiradam (Uttara Ashadha)
  • Pusam (Pushya) and Puradam (Purva Ashadha)
  • Ayilyam (Ashlesha) and Moolam (Mula)
  • Magam (Magha) and Revathi
  • Puram (Purva Phalguni) and Uthirattadhi (Uttara Bhadrapada)
  • Uthiram (Uttara Phalguni) and Purattadhi (Purva Bhadrapada)
  • Hastham (Hasta) and Sadhayam (Shatabhisha)
  • Mirugasiridam (Mrigashira), Chithirai (Chitra) and Avittam (Dhanishta) — each of these three is in Vedha with the other two.

How Vedha Porutham is calculated

Look up the bride's star and the groom's star in the list above. If they appear together in the same pair (or in the group of three), there is Vedha, and Vedha Porutham does not match. In every other case, it matches.

The check works the same whichever partner's star you start with. The same star for both partners is not a Vedha pair, so Vedha Porutham matches in that case — though Rajju will not, as explained in our Rajju article.

Worked examples

Example 1: The bride is Ashwini and the groom is Kettai. This is a Vedha pair, so Vedha Porutham does not match.

Example 2: The bride is Rohini and the groom is Uthiram. They are not a Vedha pair, so it matches.

Example 3: The bride is Chithirai and the groom is Avittam. Both are in the group of three, so there is Vedha — not a match.

Example 4: The bride is Magam and the groom is Puram. Not a Vedha pair, so it matches.

Vedha and Rajju together

In the traditional tables, every Vedha pair also falls in the same rajju. Ashwini and Kettai are both Pada rajju, Rohini and Swathi are both Kanta rajju, and Mirugasiridam, Chithirai and Avittam are all Siro rajju — and so on for every pair.

This means that whenever Vedha Porutham does not match, Rajju Porutham does not match either, and astrologers usually advise particular care. The reverse is not true: many pairs of stars share a rajju without being a Vedha pair. Rohini and Hastham, for example, are both Kanta rajju but are not in Vedha.

Commonly cited exceptions and variations

The list of Vedha pairs is one of the most consistent parts of Tamil matching, and most astrologers use the same pairs shown above.

Views differ more on how strictly to apply it. Many astrologers treat Vedha as a firm reason not to proceed. Some consider the concern lighter when the rest of the horoscopes — including dosha samyam — are strongly in balance. Because opinions vary, a Vedha result is best discussed with a trusted astrologer who can see both full horoscopes.

Keeping perspective

Vedha Porutham, like every porutham, compares only two birth stars. It is a long-standing traditional guideline, not a forecast. Manavizha shows it in the porutham breakdown as guidance, so families can discuss it openly and decide together.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vedha the same as Vedha dosham?
Yes. When two stars form a Vedha pair, families often call it Vedha dosham. Vedha Porutham is said to match when there is no Vedha.
Does the same star cause Vedha?
No. The same star is not in any Vedha pair, although the same star does cause a Rajju mismatch.
Which is more important, Rajju or Vedha?
Rajju is most often named first, but both are widely treated as essential.
Can Vedha be checked from the stars alone?
Yes. Vedha uses only the two birth stars, so it can be checked as soon as both stars are known.
