Why Tamil families match horoscopes
In many Tamil homes, the first serious step after two families like a proposal is to exchange jathagams. An elder, a family astrologer or a temple priest then checks the "porutham" (பொருத்தம்) between the bride's and the groom's horoscopes. The word simply means agreement or suitability.
Porutham matching compares the birth star (nakshatra) and the Moon sign (rasi) of the two people. From these, ten separate checks are made, each looking at one area of married life — health, temperament, children, prosperity, affection, family growth and so on. Together they are known as the ten poruthams, or பத்துப் பொருத்தங்கள்.

What you need to check porutham
Only two details from each horoscope are needed: the birth star (for example Rohini or Kettai) and the rasi (for example Rishabam or Viruchigam). Both come from the position of the Moon at the time of birth, so an accurate date, time and place of birth matters.
Several poruthams are counted from the girl's star to the boy's star. The direction matters: counting the other way gives a different number, which is why the bride's details are always taken as the starting point.
The ten poruthams at a glance
Here is what each porutham looks at, in the order most Tamil astrologers list them. The names in brackets are the labels you will see on Manavizha.
- Dina Porutham (தினப் பொருத்தம்) — day-to-day harmony, health and long life together. Based on the count from the girl's star to the boy's star.
- Gana Porutham (கணப் பொருத்தம்) — temperament. Every star belongs to one of three ganas: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa.
- Mahendra Porutham (மகேந்திரப் பொருத்தம்) — wellbeing and progeny (children). Also based on the star count.
- Stree Deerkha (ஸ்திரீ தீர்க்கப் பொருத்தம்) — the bride's wellbeing and the family's prosperity. The boy's star should be well ahead of the girl's.
- Yoni Porutham (யோனிப் பொருத்தம்) — physical and emotional affinity. Each star is linked to an animal, and some animal pairs are considered enemies.
- Rasi Porutham (ராசிப் பொருத்தம்) — family growth and harmony, based on the distance between the two rasis.
- Rasiyathipathi (ராசி அதிபதி பொருத்தம்) — whether the planets that rule the two rasis are friendly.
- Vasya Porutham (வசியப் பொருத்தம்) — mutual attraction and understanding between particular rasi pairs.
- Rajju Porutham (ரஜ்ஜு பொருத்தம்) — the strength of the marital bond. The two stars should not fall in the same rajju group.
- Vedha Porutham (வேதைப் பொருத்தம்) — absence of affliction. Certain pairs of stars are considered to obstruct each other.
Uthamam, Madhyamam and Athamam
Once the ten checks are done, the result is usually summarised in one of three words. Uthamam (உத்தமம்) means excellent, Madhyamam (மத்திமம்) means average or acceptable, and Athamam (அதமம்) means weak.
Different astrologers draw the lines slightly differently. On Manavizha, a pairing with 7 or more matching poruthams is shown as Uthamam, 5 or 6 as Madhyamam, and fewer than 5 as Athamam. You will also see exactly which of the ten matched, because the individual results often matter more than the total.
A Madhyamam result is common and is not a rejection. Many families go ahead after an astrologer reviews the unmatched poruthams and the dosham position of both charts.
Which poruthams are considered most important?
Not all ten carry equal weight. Rajju is widely regarded as the most important; in many families a Rajju mismatch is treated as a serious concern even when the total score is high. Vedha is also commonly treated as essential.
After these, Dina, Gana, Yoni and Rasi are often given extra weight, and Mahendra and Stree Deerkha are valued for children and prosperity. Rasiyathipathi and Vasya are usually seen as supporting factors. Traditions and individual astrologers differ here, so it is worth asking your astrologer how they weigh each one.
Porutham is one part of the picture
