What is Dina Porutham?

Dina Porutham (தினப் பொருத்தம்) is usually the first of the ten poruthams an astrologer checks. "Dinam" means day, and this porutham is traditionally linked to the day-to-day life of the couple — good health, freedom from frequent troubles and a long, steady life together.

Because it reflects ordinary daily harmony, many astrologers give Dina Porutham more weight than some of the other poruthams. On Manavizha it appears as "Dina Porutham (Health & Longevity)".

What you need

Only the birth stars (nakshatras) of the bride and the groom are needed. The 27 stars run in a fixed order, from Ashwini (அஸ்வினி) to Revathi (ரேவதி), and the order wraps around: after Revathi the count continues from Ashwini again.

How Dina Porutham is calculated

Start from the girl's birth star and count forward to the boy's birth star. The girl's own star is counted as 1. So if the boy's star is the very next one, the count is 2.

Then look at the count on a repeating cycle of nine. A simple way to do this is to divide the count by 9 and look at the remainder. If the remainder is 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0, Dina Porutham is considered to match. If the remainder is 1, 3, 5 or 7, it is not.

In other words, the favourable counts are:

  • 2, 4, 6, 8, 9
  • 11, 13, 15, 17, 18
  • 20, 22, 24, 26, 27

Why a cycle of nine?

The nine-step cycle comes from an old way of grouping stars into nine kinds of relationship, from the star of birth to the "very friendly" star. The same idea, called Tara (தாரை) in some traditions, is used in daily astrology to judge favourable days. Positions 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9 in each cycle are considered auspicious, while 1, 3, 5 and 7 are considered less so.

This is exactly the rule Manavizha's matching uses: counted from the girl's star to the boy's, a count of 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 or 27 is shown as a Dina match.

Worked examples

Example 1: The girl is Ashwini (அஸ்வினி), the 1st star, and the boy is Rohini (ரோகிணி), the 4th star. Counting Ashwini as 1, Bharani is 2, Krithika is 3 and Rohini is 4. A count of 4 is favourable, so Dina Porutham matches.

Example 2: Now swap them. The girl is Rohini and the boy is Ashwini. Counting forward from Rohini, wrapping past Revathi, Ashwini is the 25th star. 25 divided by 9 leaves 7, which is not favourable. This shows why the direction of counting matters.

Example 3: The girl is Hastham (அஸ்தம்) and the boy is Chithirai (சித்திரை), the very next star. The count is 2, which is favourable.

Example 4: The girl and the boy share the same star. The count is 1, which falls in the first position of the cycle, so Manavizha does not show it as a Dina match.

Commonly cited exceptions

Traditions differ on a few points, and it is worth knowing them before you read a result:

  • Same birth star: some astrologers accept the same star for both partners in particular cases — for example when the two fall in different padas or different rasis — while others avoid it. Manavizha's automatic check follows the stricter reading and does not count it.
  • Weight of other poruthams: some families accept a Dina mismatch when Rajju, Gana and Rasi are strong and the overall score is good.
  • Regional variations: a few astrologers mark certain counts within the cycle differently. If your family astrologer follows a different list, their reading should guide you.

How families use the result

Dina Porutham is one of ten checks. A mismatch on its own does not make a pairing unsuitable, and a match on its own does not make it ideal. Astrologers look at the full set, with special attention to Rajju and Vedha, and then at the doshams in both horoscopes.

Manavizha shows porutham as guidance. The breakdown on each profile lets you see at a glance which poruthams matched, so that your family can discuss the result with a trusted astrologer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dina Porutham the same as Tara Koota?
They are closely related. Both use the same nine-step cycle of stars. North Indian Ashtakoota matching scores Tara in points, while Tamil matching usually reads Dina Porutham as matched or not matched.
Why is the girl's star counted first?
By long-standing Tamil convention, star-count poruthams are counted from the bride's star to the groom's. Counting the other way gives a different number and can give a different result.
Is a Dina mismatch serious?
It is generally treated as one factor among ten. Many astrologers consider Rajju and Vedha more important, and look at the overall picture before advising a family.
