What is Yoni Porutham?

Yoni Porutham (யோனிப் பொருத்தம்) looks at physical and emotional affinity between husband and wife — the natural comfort, affection and closeness of married life. On Manavizha it is labelled "Yoni Porutham (Physical & Mental Affinity)".

Traditional astrology assigns an animal symbol to each of the 27 birth stars. Fourteen animals are used, and most of them are shared by two stars. The porutham checks whether the two animals get along.

The star animals

Tamil star names are given first, with the Sanskrit name in brackets where it differs.

  • Horse (குதிரை): Ashwini, Sadhayam (Shatabhisha)
  • Elephant (யானை): Bharani, Revathi
  • Goat (ஆடு): Karthigai (Krithika), Pusam (Pushya)
  • Serpent (பாம்பு): Rohini, Mirugasiridam (Mrigashira)
  • Dog (நாய்): Thiruvadhirai (Ardra), Moolam (Mula)
  • Cat (பூனை): Punarpoosam (Punarvasu), Ayilyam (Ashlesha)
  • Rat (எலி): Magam (Magha), Puram (Purva Phalguni)
  • Cow (பசு): Uthiram (Uttara Phalguni), Uthirattadhi (Uttara Bhadrapada)
  • Buffalo (எருமை): Hastham (Hasta), Swathi
  • Tiger (புலி): Chithirai (Chitra), Visagam (Vishakha)
  • Deer (மான்): Anusham (Anuradha), Kettai (Jyeshtha)
  • Monkey (குரங்கு): Puradam (Purva Ashadha), Thiruvonam (Shravana)
  • Mongoose (கீரி): Uthiradam (Uttara Ashadha)
  • Lion (சிங்கம்): Avittam (Dhanishta), Purattadhi (Purva Bhadrapada)

How Yoni Porutham is calculated

Find the animal for the bride's star and the animal for the groom's star. If the two animals are natural enemies, Yoni Porutham does not match. Otherwise it matches. The same animal for both is always a match.

Manavizha's matching uses these seven enemy pairs:

  • Horse and Buffalo
  • Elephant and Lion
  • Goat and Monkey
  • Serpent and Mongoose
  • Dog and Deer
  • Cat and Rat
  • Cow and Tiger

Worked examples

Example 1: The bride is Rohini (Serpent) and the groom is Uthiradam (Mongoose). Serpent and Mongoose are a classic enemy pair, so Yoni Porutham does not match.

Example 2: The bride is Hastham (Buffalo) and the groom is Swathi (Buffalo). The same animal is always compatible, so it matches.

Example 3: The bride is Magam (Rat) and the groom is Ashwini (Horse). Rat and Horse are not an enemy pair, so it matches.

Example 4: The bride is Anusham (Deer) and the groom is Moolam (Dog). Dog and Deer are enemies, so it does not match.

Where traditions differ

Many astrologers read Yoni in more than two levels. The same animal may be called excellent, friendly animals good, neutral animals acceptable, and enemy animals unfavourable. Some also distinguish a male and a female star within each animal pair and prefer particular combinations.

Manavizha's automatic check uses the simpler and widely followed rule: only the seven enemy pairs count as a mismatch. If your astrologer grades Yoni in finer steps, their reading may say more than a simple match or no match.

Commonly cited exceptions

Some families accept a Yoni mismatch when Rasi, Rasiyathipathi and Vasya are favourable, since these also speak to affection and understanding. Others treat Yoni as one of the more important poruthams and prefer it to match.

Either way, Yoni is read together with the full set of ten, and with the doshams in both horoscopes.

A gentle note

The animal symbols are a traditional way of describing compatibility, not a description of anyone's character. Real affection grows from care, respect and time spent understanding each other. Manavizha shows Yoni Porutham as guidance, never as a verdict.

How often does Yoni match?

Because only seven pairs of animals are enemies, most star combinations pass Yoni Porutham. A mismatch therefore stands out when it happens, and it is worth a closer look with your astrologer rather than a cause for worry.

Frequently asked questions

Does the order of bride and groom matter for Yoni?
Not for Manavizha's check — an enemy pair is a mismatch in either direction. Some astrologers do consider male and female stars, which can bring direction into it.
Why does Uthiradam have no partner star?
Fourteen animals are shared among 27 stars, so one animal has a single star. In this traditional list it is the Mongoose, for Uthiradam.
Is Yoni the same as Yoni Koota?
Yes, it uses the same animal symbols. North Indian Ashtakoota gives Yoni a points score; Tamil matching usually reads it as matched or not.
Is the Yoni animal related to the Chinese zodiac?
No. The Yoni animals come from the Indian tradition of nakshatras and are unrelated to the Chinese calendar animals.
