What is Rasi Porutham?

Rasi Porutham (ராசிப் பொருத்தம்) compares the rasi — the Moon sign — of the bride and the groom. It is traditionally linked to the growth of the family line, harmony between the couple and between the two families, and a home that prospers over time.

Because it looks at the rasi rather than the star, it complements the star-based poruthams such as Dina and Mahendra. On Manavizha it appears as "Rasi Porutham (Family Growth)".

The twelve rasis

The rasis follow a fixed order around the zodiac, and the count wraps around after the twelfth:

  • 1. Mesham (மேஷம்), 2. Rishabam (ரிஷபம்), 3. Midhunam (மிதுனம்), 4. Kadagam (கடகம்)
  • 5. Simmam (சிம்மம்), 6. Kanni (கன்னி), 7. Thulam (துலாம்), 8. Viruchigam (விருச்சிகம்)
  • 9. Dhanusu (தனுசு), 10. Magaram (மகரம்), 11. Kumbam (கும்பம்), 12. Meenam (மீனம்)

How Rasi Porutham is calculated

Count forward from the bride's rasi to the groom's rasi, with the bride's rasi counted as 1. Manavizha's matching then applies these rules:

  • Count of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 (the groom's rasi is the 2nd to 6th from the bride's): not matched.
  • Count of 7 to 12: matched. The 7th, where the two rasis face each other across the zodiac, is traditionally regarded as especially good.
  • Same rasi (count of 1): matched, provided the two birth stars are different. If both share the same star as well, it is not counted as a match.

Worked examples

Example 1: The bride is Mesham and the groom is Thulam. Counting Mesham as 1, Thulam is 7 — a match, and the facing-rasi position many families like to see.

Example 2: The bride is Kadagam and the groom is Kanni. Kadagam 1, Simmam 2, Kanni 3. A count of 3 is not a match.

Example 3: The bride is Rishabam with the star Rohini, and the groom is Rishabam with the star Mirugasiridam. Same rasi, different stars — a match.

Example 4: The bride is Dhanusu and the groom is Rishabam. Counting forward from Dhanusu as 1 and wrapping round, Rishabam is the 6th. Not a match.

Where traditions differ

Rasi Porutham has several regional variations, and it is one of the places where a family astrologer's reading may differ from an automatic score.

Some astrologers are cautious about the 6–8 relationship (சஷ்டாஷ்டகம், shashtashtakam), where one rasi is 6th from the other and the other is 8th in return. With the bride's rasi counted first, the groom's rasi in the 8th falls in this group. Manavizha's check counts the 8th as matched, following the 2-to-6 rule above, but some families prefer to have it reviewed.

Similarly, some astrologers look carefully at the 2–12 relationship, where the rasis sit next to each other. And on the same-rasi rule, some prefer the two stars to be in different padas or follow a list of star pairs that are acceptable within one rasi.

Commonly cited exceptions

When Rasi Porutham does not match, many astrologers look next at Rasiyathipathi. If the lords of the two rasis are the same planet or are friendly, they often consider the Rasi mismatch softened. Vasya, which also compares rasis, is sometimes read the same way.

Reading it with the rest

Rasi is one of the poruthams many astrologers give extra weight to, together with Rajju, Vedha, Dina, Gana and Yoni. Still, it is one of ten checks, and the full horoscope — doshams and dasa periods included — completes the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Is same rasi good for marriage?
On Manavizha, the same rasi counts as a Rasi match when the two birth stars are different. Some astrologers apply further conditions, such as the stars being in different padas.
Why is the 7th rasi considered good?
The 7th rasi is directly opposite, and in astrology the 7th place is the house of marriage and partnership. Facing rasis are traditionally seen as complementing each other.
What should we do if Rasi doesn't match?
Look at the overall score and at Rasiyathipathi, then discuss it with a trusted astrologer, who can read the whole horoscope.
Is Rasi Porutham counted from the bride or the groom?
From the bride's rasi to the groom's, with the bride's rasi counted as 1.
