What is Rasiyathipathi Porutham?
Every rasi is ruled by a planet, called its lord or adhipathi (அதிபதி). Rasiyathipathi Porutham (ராசி அதிபதி பொருத்தம்), also written Rasi Adhipathi Porutham, checks whether the lords of the bride's rasi and the groom's rasi are on friendly terms.
The idea is that when the ruling planets are friendly, the couple — and often the two families — find it easier to understand and support each other. On Manavizha it appears as "Rasiyathipathi (Lords' Friendship)".
The lord of each rasi
Seven planets rule the twelve rasis. Rahu and Ketu do not rule a rasi in this system.
- Mesham and Viruchigam: Sevvai (செவ்வாய், Mars)
- Rishabam and Thulam: Sukran (சுக்கிரன், Venus)
- Midhunam and Kanni: Budhan (புதன், Mercury)
- Kadagam: Chandran (சந்திரன், Moon)
- Simmam: Suriyan (சூரியன், Sun)
- Dhanusu and Meenam: Guru (குரு, Jupiter)
- Magaram and Kumbam: Sani (சனி, Saturn)
Planetary friendships
Classical astrology lists, for each planet, the planets it treats as friends. Manavizha's matching uses this friendship table:
- Sun: friends with Moon, Mars and Jupiter
- Moon: friends with Sun and Mercury
- Mars: friends with Sun, Moon and Jupiter
- Mercury: friends with Sun and Venus
- Jupiter: friends with Sun, Moon and Mars
- Venus: friends with Mercury and Saturn
- Saturn: friends with Mercury and Venus
How Rasiyathipathi is calculated
Find the lord of the bride's rasi and the lord of the groom's rasi. On Manavizha, Rasiyathipathi matches when:
- Both rasis have the same lord (for example Mesham and Viruchigam, both ruled by Mars), or
- Either lord counts the other as a friend in the table above.
Worked examples
Example 1: The bride is Mesham (Mars) and the groom is Simmam (Sun). Mars counts the Sun as a friend, so it matches.
Example 2: The bride is Kadagam (Moon) and the groom is Kanni (Mercury). The Moon counts Mercury as a friend, so it matches on Manavizha — even though, in the classical table, Mercury does not return the friendship.
Example 3: The bride is Thulam (Venus) and the groom is Simmam (Sun). Neither planet lists the other as a friend, so it does not match.
Example 4: The bride is Dhanusu (Jupiter) and the groom is Meenam (Jupiter). Same lord — a match.
Where traditions differ
In classical astrology, planetary relationships have three levels — friend, neutral and enemy — and they are not always mutual. Astrologers therefore read Rasiyathipathi in different ways.
Some require the friendship to run both ways. Others accept a neutral relationship as a partial match, and treat only an enemy relationship as a mismatch. Manavizha's check takes a middle path: friendship in at least one direction, or the same lord, counts as a match.
Because of these differences, Rasiyathipathi is a porutham where your family astrologer's reading may not exactly match the automatic result.
Why it matters alongside Rasi Porutham
Rasiyathipathi is often read together with Rasi Porutham. When the Rasi count is not favourable, many astrologers consider friendly or identical rasi lords to soften the concern. In the same way, a good Rasi count with unfriendly lords is often seen as acceptable.
Manavizha shows Rasiyathipathi as one line in the porutham breakdown, as guidance to discuss with your astrologer.
A note on the Moon's rasi and single-rasi lords
Rasiyathipathi is based on the Moon's rasi (the janma rasi) of each person, not the lagnam. If your family astrologer compares the lagna lords instead, that is a different check and can give a different answer.
Since the Sun and Moon each rule a single rasi, Simmam and Kadagam have fewer same-lord partners than the other signs. They still match with many rasis through friendship: the Sun and the Moon list each other as friends, and Jupiter counts both of them as friends.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Rasiyathipathi the same as Graha Maitri?
- Yes, it is based on the same idea of friendship between the rasi lords, which North Indian Ashtakoota calls Graha Maitri.
- Why are Rahu and Ketu not included?
- In the traditional system used for this porutham, only the seven visible planets rule rasis. Rahu and Ketu are shadow points and have no rasi of their own.
- Is a Rasiyathipathi mismatch serious?
- It is usually considered a supporting factor rather than a deciding one. Rajju and Vedha generally carry more weight.
