What is Mahendra Porutham?
Mahendra Porutham (மகேந்திரப் பொருத்தம்) is traditionally associated with progeny — the blessing of children — and with the general wellbeing and growth of the family the couple builds. The name comes from Mahendra, a title of Indra, and suggests strength and protection.
On Manavizha it appears as "Mahendra Porutham (Progeny & Wellbeing)". It is a star-count porutham, like Dina and Stree Deerkha, so it only needs the two birth stars.
How Mahendra Porutham is calculated
Start from the bride's birth star and count forward to the groom's birth star, counting the bride's own star as 1. The 27 stars run from Ashwini to Revathi and wrap around.
Mahendra Porutham matches when the count is one of these numbers:
- 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 or 25
Reading the pattern
The favourable counts begin at 4 and then step forward by three each time. Put another way, if you subtract 1 from the count, the result must be a multiple of 3 — except that a count of 1 (the same star) is not included, so the sequence starts at 4.
This is the rule Manavizha's matching follows. Any other count, including the same star, is shown as not matched.
Worked examples
Example 1: The bride is Ashwini (1st star) and the groom is Rohini (4th star). Counting Ashwini as 1, Rohini is 4 — a Mahendra match.
Example 2: The bride is Bharani and the groom is Pusam (Pushya). Counting from Bharani as 1: Karthigai 2, Rohini 3, Mirugasiridam 4, Thiruvadhirai 5, Punarpoosam 6, Pusam 7. A count of 7 matches.
Example 3: The bride is Uthiram (Uttara Phalguni) and the groom is Swathi. Counting from Uthiram as 1: Hastham 2, Chithirai 3, Swathi 4. That is a match.
Example 4: The bride is Revathi and the groom is Bharani. Counting from Revathi as 1, Ashwini is 2 and Bharani is 3. A count of 3 does not match.
Commonly cited exceptions and variations
Mahendra is one of the more consistently described poruthams, and most Tamil astrologers use the same list of counts. Still, a few points are worth knowing:
- Some families give less weight to Mahendra when other poruthams linked to the family line, such as Rasi and Rajju, are strong.
- Like the other star-count poruthams, the direction matters. Counting from the groom's star instead of the bride's can change the result.
Mahendra, Dina and Stree Deerkha together
Three of the ten poruthams — Dina, Mahendra and Stree Deerkha — all come from the same star count. It is therefore common for one count to satisfy two of them at once. A count of 4, for example, matches both Dina and Mahendra. A count of 16 matches Mahendra and Stree Deerkha, though not Dina.
Seeing them together helps you understand why some pairings score well quickly while others need a closer look.
A gentle note
Children and family wellbeing depend on many things that no chart can show — health, care, timing and simple good fortune. Mahendra Porutham is a traditional indicator that families like to see, not a prediction. Manavizha shows it as guidance alongside the other poruthams.
Quick reference: what each count means
If you already know the star count from the bride to the groom, this summary shows how Manavizha reads it for the three star-count poruthams:
- Counts 4 and 13: Dina and Mahendra both match.
- Counts 16, 19 and 25: Mahendra and Stree Deerkha match, Dina does not.
- Count 22: Dina, Mahendra and Stree Deerkha all match.
- Counts 7 and 10: Mahendra matches, Dina and Stree Deerkha do not.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a Mahendra mismatch mean no children?
- No. It is a traditional compatibility indicator, not a medical prediction. For any health question, please speak to a doctor.
- Is Mahendra counted from the bride or the groom?
- From the bride's star to the groom's, with the bride's star counted as 1.
- Why doesn't the same star match?
- The same star gives a count of 1, which is not in the Mahendra list of 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25.
- Where can I see Mahendra Porutham for a profile?
- Manavizha members see the full ten-porutham breakdown, including Mahendra, on each matching profile.
