What is Kala Sarpa Dosham?

Kala Sarpa dosham (கால சர்ப்ப தோஷம்), also called Kala Sarpa yogam, describes a particular pattern in a horoscope. It is said to be present when all seven planets — the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — lie on one side of the line joining Rahu and Ketu.

"Kalam" refers to time and "sarpam" to the serpent. The image is of the serpent formed by Rahu (the head) and Ketu (the tail) enclosing all the planets between them.

How it is identified

Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so the line between them divides the chart into two halves of six houses each. To check for Kala Sarpa dosham, an astrologer looks at where the seven planets fall:

  • If all seven are in the half running from Rahu to Ketu (or all in the half from Ketu to Rahu), the pattern is present.
  • If even one planet sits in the other half, most astrologers say the full pattern is broken.
  • Some astrologers describe a partial form when one planet is outside the enclosed half, or when a planet sits in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu but outside their exact degrees.

The twelve named types

In popular practice, Kala Sarpa dosham is divided into twelve types according to the house Rahu occupies, each named after a serpent of Indian tradition. Starting with Rahu in the 1st house, they are commonly listed as Anantha, Kulika, Vasuki, Sankhapala, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshaka, Karkotaka, Sankhachuda, Ghataka, Vishadhara and Sheshanaga. Different authors attach different meanings to each type.

Different views among astrologers

Kala Sarpa dosham is one of the most debated ideas in modern astrology. It is not described in the best-known classical texts, and many respected astrologers consider it a later addition. Others treat it as significant and include it in every reading.

Even among those who use it, there is wide disagreement about how strong its effects are and how often it applies. Because the pattern depends on only two points and seven planets, it occurs in a noticeable share of charts, and many people with it lead entirely ordinary, happy lives.

Manavizha's horoscope report does not flag Kala Sarpa dosham automatically. If you want to know whether a chart has it, an astrologer can check the positions in the rasi chart in a few minutes.

Kala Sarpa compared with Rahu–Ketu dosham

The two are related but different:

  • Rahu–Ketu (Naga) dosham depends on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy, such as the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th.
  • Kala Sarpa dosham depends on whether all the other planets lie on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, regardless of which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy.
  • A chart may show one, both or neither.

Kala Sarpa dosham in marriage matching

Kala Sarpa dosham is not part of the ten poruthams and is not usually treated as a reason, on its own, to decline a proposal. When families do consider it, they tend to look at the whole horoscope, including the dasa periods, rather than the pattern alone.

Families who wish to address it often perform a traditional pariharam. Sri Kalahasti in Andhra Pradesh and Thirunageswaram near Kumbakonam are widely visited for Rahu–Ketu and Kala Sarpa poojas. Our pariharam article describes these practices.

As always, Manavizha shows dosham and porutham as guidance. A calm conversation with a trusted astrologer is the best next step if you have questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kala Sarpa dosham mentioned in classical astrology texts?
It is not found in the best-known classical texts, which is why some astrologers do not use it. It is widely discussed in modern practice.
Is Kala Sarpa dosham the same as Sarpa dosham?
No. Sarpa or Naga dosham usually refers to Rahu–Ketu dosham, based on the houses they occupy. Kala Sarpa is about all planets being on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis.
Does Kala Sarpa dosham affect porutham?
No. The ten poruthams are calculated from the birth stars and rasis alone. Kala Sarpa is a separate consideration in the full horoscope.
Can Kala Sarpa dosham be checked from the star alone?
No. It needs the positions of all the planets, so a full horoscope from the exact date, time and place of birth is required.
