Dosham and porutham: how they work together in matching

தோஷமும் பொருத்தமும்

Porutham compares two birth stars; dosham looks inside each horoscope. Learn how astrologers combine the ten poruthams with Sevvai and Rahu–Ketu dosham, dosha samyam and dasa sandhi.

Two different questions

When an astrologer reviews a proposal, they are really answering two separate questions. Porutham asks: how well do these two birth stars and rasis agree? Dosham asks: does either horoscope carry a particular planetary influence that should be balanced in the other?

The two are calculated in completely different ways and from different parts of the jathagam, which is why a pairing can score well on one and need attention on the other.

Porutham: comparing stars

The ten poruthams — Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deerkha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasiyathipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha — use only the birth star (nakshatra) and rasi of each person. Both come from the Moon's position at birth.

The result is usually summarised as Uthamam, Madhyamam or Athamam. On Manavizha, 7 or more matching poruthams is Uthamam, 5 or 6 is Madhyamam and fewer than 5 is Athamam, and you can see each of the ten individually. Rajju and Vedha are widely treated as the most important.

Dosham: looking inside each chart

Doshams come from the positions of planets in each person's own horoscope, so they need the full birth details — date, time and place — rather than just the star and rasi. The doshams most often discussed in Tamil matching are:

  • Sevvai dosham — Mars in certain houses (1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th) from the lagnam, Moon or Venus.
  • Rahu–Ketu (Naga or Sarpa) dosham — Rahu and Ketu in houses important for marriage.
  • Kala Sarpa dosham — all seven planets on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis; its importance is debated among astrologers.

Dosha samyam: balance, not elimination

The key idea that ties dosham to matching is dosha samyam (தோஷ சாம்யம்) — balance. Traditionally, the aim is not that neither person has a dosham, but that the influence is balanced between the two charts. A person with Sevvai dosham is therefore often matched with a partner who also has it.

Many astrologers measure this balance with malefic points. Manavizha's horoscope report includes a பாப புள்ளிகள் (papa pulligal) table that scores Mars, Saturn, the Sun and Rahu by their houses from the lagnam, Moon and Venus. Comparing the totals of the two charts gives a quick view of the balance. A common traditional guideline is that the groom's total should be equal to or a little higher than the bride's.

Dasa sandhi: timing

Some astrologers also check dasa sandhi (தசா சந்தி) — whether both partners will move from one major planetary period (dasa) to the next at around the same time. Many prefer to avoid a close overlap. This depends on the exact birth details and is usually checked by an astrologer rather than in a simple score.

Putting it together: a typical order

Every astrologer has their own method, but many follow a sequence like this:

  • Check Rajju and Vedha first. If either does not match, many astrologers advise caution before going further.
  • Look at the overall porutham count and the other key poruthams — Dina, Gana, Yoni and Rasi.
  • Check each horoscope for Sevvai and Rahu–Ketu dosham and, if present, whether the other chart balances it.
  • Compare the malefic points of both charts for overall dosha samyam.
  • Look at the dasa periods, including dasa sandhi.
  • Discuss any concerns and possible pariharams with the family.

Common situations

High porutham, unbalanced dosham: for example 8 out of 10 poruthams, but only one partner has Sevvai dosham. Many astrologers look first for a cancellation, then at the overall malefic points, before giving their view.

Average porutham, balanced dosham: for example 5 or 6 poruthams with Rajju and Vedha matched and both partners having similar doshams. Many families are comfortable proceeding.

Rajju or Vedha not matched: even with balanced doshams, many astrologers treat this as a serious concern and some do not recommend proceeding.

How Manavizha helps

Manavizha shows the ten-porutham score and breakdown on each matching profile, and its free horoscope generator shows Sevvai and Rahu dosham along with the papa pulligal table. These are meant as guidance, so families can begin an informed conversation early.

Astrology is one consideration among many. Character, values, education, health and the comfort of both families matter just as much — and the final decision always belongs to the couple and their elders.

Frequently asked questions

Can porutham be good and dosham still be a concern?
Yes. They measure different things. A high porutham score says nothing about doshams, which is why astrologers check both.
Does a dosham reduce the porutham score?
No. The ten poruthams use only the birth stars and rasis. Doshams are assessed separately from the full horoscopes.
If both partners have Sevvai dosham, is that good?
Traditionally, yes — it is the classic example of dosha samyam, where the influence is balanced on both sides.
