What is Sevvai Dosham?
Sevvai (செவ்வாய்) is the Tamil name for the planet Mars. Sevvai dosham, also called Chevvai dosham, Kuja dosham or Mangal dosham (Manglik), is a traditional consideration in marriage matching based on where Mars sits in a person's horoscope.
Mars is associated with energy, courage, drive and directness. The traditional view is that when Mars occupies certain houses in the chart, these qualities show strongly in married life, and that it is best balanced by a partner with a similar Mars placement. That idea of balance — not fear — is at the heart of how most astrologers approach it.
Sevvai dosham is very common. Depending on the method used, a large share of all horoscopes show it in some form, so finding it in a jathagam is nothing unusual.
How Sevvai Dosham is identified
Astrologers count houses from a reference point in the chart. The traditional houses for Sevvai dosham are:
- 1st house — the self
- 2nd house — family and speech
- 4th house — home and comfort
- 7th house — marriage and partnership
- 8th house — longevity and shared resources
- 12th house — expenses and rest
From lagnam, Moon and Venus
The house can be counted from three reference points: the lagnam (the rising sign), the Moon (the rasi) and Venus (Sukran, the planet of marriage). Different astrologers use one, two or all three of these.
Manavizha's horoscope report checks all three. It counts Mars's house from the lagnam, from the Moon and from Venus, and marks Sevvai dosham as present (தோஷம் உள்ளது) when Mars falls in one of the six dosha houses from at least two of the three reference points. If it falls in a dosha house from only one of them, or none, the report shows no dosham (தோஷம் இல்லை).
This means a chart that some astrologers would call Sevvai dosham — for example, Mars in the 7th from lagnam only — may be shown as no dosham on Manavizha. Looking for agreement across reference points is a common way of avoiding over-diagnosis, but your astrologer may use a different rule.
Variations between traditions
Some South Indian traditions include the 2nd house, while many North Indian ones do not. Some astrologers treat the dosham as stronger in the 7th and 8th houses and milder in the others. Some count only from the lagnam; others give the Moon equal weight. These differences explain why two astrologers can read the same chart differently.
Commonly cited cancellations
Traditional texts and practising astrologers describe many situations in which Sevvai dosham is considered cancelled or reduced (தோஷ நிவர்த்தி). Lists vary, but these are among the most commonly cited:
- Mars in its own signs, Mesham or Viruchigam, or in its sign of exaltation, Magaram.
- Mars joined with, or aspected by, Jupiter (Guru), which is believed to soften its effect.
- Mars in specific house-and-sign combinations that particular texts list as exempt; these lists differ between traditions.
- Certain lagnams for which Mars is considered a beneficial planet, such as Kadagam and Simmam, according to some astrologers.
- Both partners having Sevvai dosham, which brings us to dosha samyam.
Dosha samyam: balance between two charts
Dosha samyam (தோஷ சாம்யம்) means balance of doshams. The most widely followed principle is that a person with Sevvai dosham is best matched with a partner who also has it, so that the influence is balanced on both sides.
Many astrologers go further and compare the total malefic influence in both charts. Manavizha's horoscope report includes a table called பாப புள்ளிகள் (papa pulligal, malefic points) for exactly this purpose. It scores Mars, Saturn, the Sun and Rahu by their houses from the lagnam, the Moon and Venus, and shows the totals. A common traditional guideline is that the groom's total should be equal to, or somewhat higher than, the bride's.
A balanced perspective
Sevvai dosham has caused needless worry for many families, and many good proposals have been set aside because of it. It is worth remembering how common it is, how many cancellations are recognised, and that astrologers themselves disagree on the details.
If your horoscope or a prospective partner's shows Sevvai dosham, the usual step is simply to have both charts reviewed together by a trusted astrologer. Manavizha shows dosham and porutham as guidance; the decision belongs to the couple and their families.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a person with Sevvai dosham marry someone without it?
- Many do, especially when a cancellation applies or the overall dosha samyam is balanced. Traditions differ, so it is best reviewed by an astrologer with both charts.
- Does Sevvai dosham reduce with age?
- Some people believe its effect lessens after a certain age, often mentioned as around 28. This is a popular belief rather than a universal rule.
- Why does Manavizha show no dosham when my astrologer says I have it?
- Manavizha marks Sevvai dosham only when at least two of the three reference points — lagnam, Moon and Venus — agree. An astrologer who counts from the lagnam alone may reach a different conclusion.
- Are there remedies?
- Yes, there are many traditional practices. See our article on pariharam for common examples.
